Description from the seller

ANCIENT ORTHODOX ICON OF CHRIST Pantocrator WITH RIZA / METAL COVER

Antiqued religious icon of Orthodox tradition, depicting Christ Pantocrator, presented in a gilded frame and protected by glass.
The image shows Christ facing forward, with a nimbus or halo, holding the Book of the Gospels and with the right hand in a blessing gesture.
The piece features an elaborately worked metal cover repousse, traditionally called riza or oklad, which covers much of the composition leaving visible mainly the face and hands.

CHARACTERISTICS

Type: Orthodox religious icon
Representation: Christ Pantocrator
Stylistic origin: Eastern Europe / Orthodox tradition
Technique: Religious image partially covered by a metal riza/oklad
Cover: Worked and repoussé metal
Decoration: Geometric and ornamental motifs
Halo: Metallic, integrated into the cover
Frame: Gilded
Protection: Glass
Era: To be determined
Artist/Workshop: Not identified
Exact material of the cover: To be determined

DESCRIPTION

Interesting devotional icon of Christ Pantocrator, one of the fundamental representations of Eastern Christian iconography.
The figure appears frontal, bearing a book in the left hand while giving the blessing gesture with the right.

The metal cover stands out, worked with reliefs and different textures. This type of cladding was used to ornament and protect certain zones of icons, leaving the painted parts considered essential, especially the face and hands.

The piece also retains its gilded frame, which shows signs of age and use.

CONDITION

Antique piece in age-appropriate condition.
There are signs of wear, patina, small marks, and surface alterations in both the frame and the metal elements.
The photograph has been taken through the glass, so reflections make it difficult to accurately appreciate some details of the painting and the metal cover.
It is recommended to carefully review the photographs as part of the description.

IMPORTANT ABOUT THE MATERIAL

It is not stated that the riza/oklad is silver.
Although many antique pieces of this type were made in silver or gilded silver, there are also numerous examples in brass, copper, alpaca, and other metals, plated or not.
Without photographs of possible stamps, contrasts, or inscriptions, the material should be announced simply as metal. It is sold exactly as shown in the photos.
