Neil Alden Armstrong, born in Wapakoneta in 1930, was the first man to set foot on the Moon. A United States Navy pilot and test pilot, he joined NASA's astronaut corps in 1962 and commanded the Gemini 8 mission in 1966, which achieved the first docking of two spacecraft in orbit. On July 20, 1969, at the helm of Apollo 11 with Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, he piloted the lunar module Eagle to the Sea of Tranquility.
