Original copper engraving of Naumachiae id est navalis pugnae locus Onuphrii Panvinii veronensis, published in François Desseine’s 18th‑century edition after Panvinio, Italy, Roma, aquaforte on period paper in good condition and non‑coloured.
Description from the seller
Splendid and rare original copper engraving (etching and engraving), printed on strong, laid contemporary paper, depicting the complex and spectacular revival of a Naumachia (Roman naval battle).
The composition shows a monumental elliptical arena completely flooded with water, inside which a violent and spectacular close-quarters clash between opposing fleets is taking place.
This famous archaeological study, based on the surveys of the humanist Onofrio Panvinio (1530-1568) and originally engraved by Étienne Du Pérac, is here reissued in the prestigious eighteenth-century edition curated by the historian François Desseine and printed by François Halma.
Lo Scontro delle Flotte: At the center of the flooded artificial basin, dozens of warships on both sides confront each other (galleys and streched-triremes [spearheaded]). The frantic moments of the boarding are clearly distinguishable, with soldiers crowded on the decks, archers ready to shoot, and ships that sink or collide frontally with their prows.
The Architecture of the Amphitheatre: The water basin is encircled by a majestic continuous loggia with classical arches on multiple levels that houses the spectator stairs, culminating in the background with a large imperial palace or tribune of honor crowned by statues and pediments.
Genuine exemplar in excellent preservation. Sharp impression, rich in contrasts and well inked. Presents the usual central editorial fold.
