Description from the seller

2 chairs from the 1970s, Selene model produced by Artemide for Vico Magistretti, in VERY GOOD overall condition, normal signs of wear but no significant damage.
Color: Orange
Strictly Made in Italy

The Selene chair, whose design dates back to 1966, was designed by Magistretti to be produced in plastic material, as he himself states: «The seat and backrest are simple curved planes. The legs were, for me, the true image of the piece with a volume as thin as the leg of a common wooden chair. I solved it by using the characteristic of a plastic material mold formed by a simple sheet of 3 millimeters thickness with a simple S-shaped section, very resistant, which gave the object a clear kinship with ordinary legged chairs rather than chairs without legs. It was a fun job with the cabinetmaker-model maker on the wooden model». Produced in series, "one finished piece comes off the machine every five minutes", Selene is the fruit of a single stamping and pressing action on the prepreg sheet (Ottagono 15, 1969). Magistretti solves the problem of leg strength by adopting an S-shaped configuration that provides strength to the 3 mm thick plastic sheet. The formal yet structural solution had already been adopted earlier in the Chimera lamp (self-supporting sheet of acrylic) and in the development of the legs of the Demetrio table, also made in GRP. The Selene chair, an excellent example of understated elegance and the essential expressiveness of using new technologies, achieved international success and spread in the following decades from America to Japan, also available in pastel colors typical of the Post-Modern period.
