Pair of Art Deco bookends in spelter with original green-shaded patina and polychrome marble bases, dating from circa 1925, by Michel Leducq, with two objects in excellent condition and featuring a lively duo of squirrels holding fruit between their paws.
Description from the seller
A VIVID DIALOGUE & STRIKING ANIMAL GRACE: A masterful pair of bookends from the 1920s–1930s. Far from mere utilitarian objects, these are two splendid squirrels captured in close complicity, facing each other in a mysterious and captivating exchange.
PLAYFULNESS FROZEN IN BRONZE:
In an attentive and greedy posture, the two subjects stand face to face, delicately holding their fruit between their paws. Their superbly curved, plume-like tails draw fluid lines that catch the eye and infuse an immediate organic presence into your bookcase or desk, magnificently sublimated by the Art Deco purity.
ORIGINAL GREEN-SHADED PATINA & POLYCHROME MARBLE:
- Sculpted in art metal (spelter) with an original green-shaded bronze patina, the forms faithfully capture the finest details of the fur and offer a tactile relief of great sensuality beneath the fingers.
- Each squirrel rests on a heavy, ribbed grey-brown marble base (polychrome marble), ensuring perfect balance and stability to hold your art books.
- The authentic signature "M. Leducq" is clearly engraved at the back on the base of each subject's tail, guaranteeing their authenticity.
MICHEL LEDUCQ (1879–1955):
A pupil of masters Mercié and Peter, this French sculptor established himself as a key figure of the Art Deco animalier movement, regularly exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français. A high-quality piece selected by Antiques Foundry to bring a touch of timeless and warm elegance to a collector's interior.
