Antique Black Forest Carved Wooden Jewellery Casket with Birds & Nest – Late 19th Century
Beautiful and elaborate Black Forest-style hand-carved wooden jewellery casket, dating from the late 19th century, circa 1870–1900.
The oval casket is exceptionally decorative, with the lid surmounted by two fully carved birds with raised wings surrounding a nest containing eggs. The naturalistic composition continues throughout the piece with deeply carved oak leaves, branches and acorns.
The casket stands on an elaborate openwork base formed from intertwined branches, foliage and acorns. The sides are richly textured and carved, while the front retains its decorative metal fitting and ring handle.
The hinged lid opens to reveal a spacious oval compartment lined in deep burgundy/red velvet. Even the underside is extensively hand-carved, demonstrating the considerable craftsmanship involved in its construction.
Dimensions: 17 × 25 × 17 cm.
The piece is in antique condition with age-related wear. There are losses and old repairs to some of the delicate projecting carved elements, particularly around the birds and extremities. Please study the photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.
