Specimen: Conque; Scientific name: Lobatus Gigas (Strombus Gigas) – Conque Royale; No. of items: 1; Origin: Central America and the Caribbean; Condition: Good; Year: 1920; Weight: 1980 g; Authenticity: Original.
Description from the seller
Conque royale, scientifically known as Lobatus gigas (formerly Strombus gigas or recently reclassified by some taxonomists as Aliger gigas), is a large marine gastropod mollusk more commonly called lambi in the French Caribbean.
Shell collected before the 1920s-1930s (it was in a great-aunt’s collection since that time, preserved in tissue paper)
A beautiful and imposing piece of Strombus gigas, the iconic Queen Conch, enjoyed for its sculptural form and its inimitable coloration. This classic Caribbean shell stands out for its generous proportions and its natural elegant presence.
The exterior displays warm tones ranging from soft cream to peach and pale orange, with subtle bands and growth lines that underline its organic development. The interior opening reveals the smooth, glossy surface characteristic, with delicate cream-pink hues, creating a pleasant contrast with the more textured outer shell.
The flared lip is well formed, giving the piece its distinctive silhouette, while the overall piece remains solid and visually balanced. Natural surface variations and light markings are present, in keeping with the species, origin, and age of the shell. Note 2/3 missing (tips of the projections) and an opening-groove at the level of the first whorls
Dimensions (see photos): about 24 cm in length, 19 cm in width, and 18 cm in thickness)
1980 grams (almost 2 kilograms)
Timeless and highly decorative shell, ideal for collectors, coastal interiors, or as a refined natural history piece.
Attention bidders outside the EU: This lot may require specific CITES clearance procedures to be shipped outside France and then imported into your country.
