Description from the seller
Royal Blue Lapis Lazuli Freeform – 6.60 kg – Afghanistan
This impressive natural lapis lazuli freeform displays a rich royal-blue colour and has been carefully polished to reveal the beauty of the stone. The specimen originates from Badakhshan, Afghanistan, a region renowned for producing lapis lazuli of exceptional quality and historical importance.
Lapis lazuli is one of the world's most historically valued ornamental stones. It has been traded and treasured for thousands of years, with Afghan lapis reaching ancient civilizations across long-distance trade routes. In ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, it was used for jewellery, amulets, decorative objects and inlays, and it was associated with royalty and prestige.
When finely ground into a powder, lapis lazuli has also had an important artistic use. Its blue components were historically processed to produce ultramarine pigment, one of the most highly prized blue pigments used by artists. Ground lapis has also been used in decorative and artistic applications.
Today, lapis lazuli remains highly appreciated by gemstone collectors, mineral enthusiasts, interior designers and artists. Some traditional and crystal-healing practices also attribute various healing or calming properties to lapis lazuli; these are traditional beliefs and are not scientifically established medical treatments.
The combination of its large size, deep royal-blue appearance, polished freeform shape and Afghan origin makes this an eye-catching collector's piece and a striking decorative object.
