Rare gemstone quality, Amethyst Geode Sculpture The amethyst geodes from Uruguay are mined from the same rock formation as their relatives just north of the border in southern Brazil and are of volcanic origin. Uruguayan amethyst can, however, usually be distinguished from its Brazilian relatives by the typically paler color, and in the case of higher-quality amethyst, the color of Uruguayan amethyst is overall darker. Many of the Uruguayan amethyst geodes also contain agate in their shells. The majority of amethyst from Uruguay is mined in open pit, and the geodes or crystals must undergo a number of washing or drying cycles to remove the stubborn mud so that the amethyst crystals can be exposed. Due to the very hard basalt matrix in which the geodes formed, and the tendency for the geode to crack open either through natural processes or during mining, it is difficult to obtain whole geodes from this area, so usually an amethyst half/partial piece or a slab is most commonly seen.
