Ancient Hanau Silver Snuff Box / Snuff Tin with Cherub Relief – ca. 1900
Description:
For sale is an exquisite antique hinged box (snuff box / pill box) made of solid silver, crafted in the famous silver town of Hanau around the turn of the century (ca. 1890–1910).
The hinged lid features a magnificent, highly detailed relief (repoussé work) in a historic Baroque/Rococo style. It shows two winged putti (cherubs) in an opulent floral ornamental frame.
On the underside are the typical Hanauer pseudo-punch marks (crown, coat-of-arms shields), characteristic of the high-quality Historicism works of this era. The box is in a beautiful, age-appropriate original condition with a charming, authentic silver patina. The hinge closes flawlessly.
