Alabaster chandelier and basin – 19th century
France, second half of the 19th century
Elegant and spectacular French Napoleon III style chandelier, made of richly adorned and gilt bronze, featuring a substantial circular alabaster basin with beautiful natural nuances.
The chandelier’s structure is particularly decorative and richly worked. It presents numerous ornaments characteristic of the Second Empire taste: scrolls, acanthus leaves, garlands, volutes and foliate elements.
The central part consists of a fine alabaster basin of about 40 cm in diameter. The natural translucency of this stone allows for a particularly warm illumination. An independent light source is placed inside to illuminate the basin and bring out the natural nuances of the alabaster.
The chandelier also has three light-bearing arms ending in glass tulips. Each tulip is held by three brass screws gripping the rim of the glass, a fixing system characteristic of this type of antique luminaire.
The whole presents a significant decorative upper portion as well as a suspension chain.
The wiring has been redone, allowing the chandelier to be used in a contemporary interior.
There is a discreet crack at the top of the shaft, invisible when suspended and not compromising strength, the whole being fixed by an internal threaded rod.
