Description from the seller
Covered jar with floral decoration
Sawankhalok wares
Sukhothai period, 14th–16th centuries
Thailand
Stoneware with underglaze painted decoration and glaze
Dimensions: 14 cm x 12 cm diameter
Elegant stoneware covered jar from Sawankhalok workshops, one of the main centers of ceramic production in the Kingdom of Sukhothai, in present-day Thailand, between the 14th and 16th centuries.
Globular in shape, the jar features a generously rounded shoulder, a short neck, and a slightly splayed annular foot. It is accompanied by its conical buttoned lid, whose surface is adorned with a radiating motif of stylized petals.
The decoration, executed in dark iron-based pigment under a translucent glaze with ivory and bluish-grey hues, freely unfolds over the belly. It depicts a network of sinuous branches dotted with leaves and small stylized flowers, evoking moving vegetation. This naturalistic composition, characterized by the spontaneity of the line and the rhythmic repetition of motifs, is part of the ornamental repertoire of Sawankhalok painted ceramics.
The shoulder and lower part of the belly are outlined by several registers of concentric lines, creating a graphic frame that balances the floral composition. The lid repeats this decorative organization with a radial frieze, while subtle bluish tones appear in certain glaze areas.
The surface shows an extensive network of fine crazing, with color variations ranging from cream white to light amber beige. These characteristics give the piece notable visual depth and attest to the technical peculiarities of its firing and aging of the glaze.
The annular base, largely unglazed, reveals a light paste typical of regional productions.
The Sawankhalok workshops, notably established in the Si Satchanalai region, developed considerably under the Kingdom of Sukhothai and during the early centuries of the Ayutthaya period. Their productions, particularly valued for the quality of their stoneware and underglaze painted decorations, were widely disseminated through Southeast Asia’s maritime trade networks.
Condition: Presence of a generalized network of crazing, glaze variations, and signs of age. Lid present. Overall good condition. Some small chips, including one at the lip.
Provenance: Kanaka The Collection, Portugal
