Stone statue from Bongo tribe, South Sudan.
Dimensions: height: 17.8 cm; width: 9 cm; depth: 10 cm. Weight: 2.03 kilos.
Type of stone: volcanic stone (basalt conglomerate).
Estimated age: 400 AD.
Provenance and history of the piece: collected on 1949 in Zanga, South Sudan, Western Bahr El Ghazal province, by comboni father Filiberto Giorgetti. Acquired by us with a bunch of other posts and stone statues from South Sudan from Walter Giorgetti, relative of father Filiberto Giorgetti, on 2008.
Overall condition: the statue shows deep signs of erosion, but it is in good condition and looks amazing. Few of this type of stone statues have been catalogued in western museums, one of the most famous examples is located at the National Museum of African Art in Washington DC. This piece comes from the archaeological area of Zanga, 120 kilometres southwest of Raga, South Sudan.
