This image shows the splendid historical map entitled "Africa Iuxta Navigationes et Observationes Recentissimas...", created by the famous German cartographer Georg Matthäus Seutter and published in Augsburg around 1730.
The map is also included in later editions of his renowned Atlas Minor.

Cartographer: Georg Matthäus Seutter (1678–1757), one of the most important map publishers of the German school of the eighteenth century. The African continent is depicted with the characteristic hand-applied era coloring to distinguish historic kingdoms and the coasts known at the time. The interior of the continent features rivers and mountain chains that are hypothetical or based on geographical myths of the era (such as the sources of the Nile and the legendary Moon Mountains). The decorative cartouche: In the lower-left corner sits a rich and elaborate illustrated cartouche. It shows African natives, the exotic fauna of the region (including a crocodile in the foreground and a leopard) and river deities embodying the great geographical mysteries of the African continent.

At the bottom margin stands the original editorial note: "Augsp. in Verlag bey Albr. Georg Zötter, Geogr. in Augspurg"
