Large celadon stoneware platter from Sukhothai / Si Satchanalai (Sawankhalok)
Thailand, 14th – 16th century
10 cm height x 30 cm diameter
This piece is a remarkable testimony to Sawankhalok ceramics, produced during the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya periods. Strongly influenced by Chinese Longquan celadons, Thai potters developed a distinctive local style. These large lobed platters were prestige pieces highly prized, widely exported throughout maritime Southeast Asia, notably to Indonesia and the Philippines.
Important circular hollow plate in stoneware with a poly-lobed corolla lip, featuring a finely incised decoration under a translucent crackled celadon glaze, in a delicate olive green-gray hue. The basin is centered by a sunken medallion marked by two concentric circles. The rim is adorned with an elegant register of incised wavy motifs simulating waves or stylized aquatic scrolls, framed by circular nets. The outer wall is fully rhythmic with vertical flutes radiating like stylized lotus petals. The edgeextends into a flared lip, subtly cut into regular lobes imitating the corolla of a blooming flower.
The reverse shows a bare footring, revealing the ferruginous baked earth in a brown-orange / brick tone, typical of Si Satchanalai kiln productions. One can discern the gray circular mark left by the kiln pontil (tubular support on refractory clay).
Condition: The stoneware presents a thick celadon glaze that has accumulated in places in the incised hollows, accentuating the design and revealing a tight network of cracks of origin. Good overall condition for a piece of this age. Slight surface wear, small air bubbles burst in the glaze during firing, and discreet imperfections on the lip edge testifying to its age and authenticity. Small chip and minor restoration at one spot on the lip edge.
