Pair of small jars with a short-necked body and a rounded lip
Ming Dynasty (1368–1644)
Southern China (Anhui, Guangdong or Fujian kilns)
So-called “trade” productions
Stoneware with a lead-glazed, crackled cover
Height of the largest: 19 cm x 15 cm
Set composed of two small ovoid-conical storage jars, featuring a pronounced shoulder and a short neck topped by a thick rounded lip. The bodies of the vessels are animated by slight horizontal grooves left by the potter’s wheel turns.
The left jar displays a dark brown robe with olive highlights, characterized by a fine speckled glaze reminiscent of a “pear skin” effect, ending irregularly just above an unglazed base.
The right jar bears a much lighter cover, ranging from cream to amber-yellow, marked by a dense and pronounced network of crazing (stress cracking), typical of Songxi-type stonewares or certain provincial productions intended for export to Southeast Asia.
The base reveals a flat, slightly concave foot, showing a coarse beige-gray stoneware paste dotted with ferruginous impurities. The presence of thread-cut marks on the bottom testifies to a handmade, rapid manufacturing technique typical of utilitarian pieces from the period.
These mid-sized jars were originally intended for the transport and preservation of precious commodities (spices, condiments, oils, or medicinal alcohols). Produced in large quantities in private kilns in southern China, they were widely distributed along the Silk Road maritime routes. Their robustness and the sobriety of their lines give them today a raw, timeless aesthetic that is highly sought after.
