The work of Hellenistic origin was discovered in 1772 at Centocelle (Rome), from which it takes its name; it is also known as the Eros of Centocelle. It was purchased by Pope Clement XIV and subsequently displayed in the Hall of Busts and Statues of the Vatican Museums, where it is kept to this day. In 1800, for a short period, the Eros of Centocelle was also exhibited at the Louvre after Napoleon Bonaparte’s acquisition from Pope Pius VI within the framework of the Treaty of Tolentino.
