Limbach - Coffee pot - Porcelain

A rare, large and early piece of Thuringian porcelain from the renowned Porzellanfabrik Limbach, founded by Gotthelf Greiner. This monumental coffee pot is executed in the classic ribbed pear-shaped form and is entirely hand-painted in underglaze blue with the refined Strohblumenmuster (straw flower decoration).

With an impressive height of 30 cm and a weight of 1,408 g, this is the largest size pouring coffee pot (Riesenkaffeekanne) from this early dinnerware.

Exceptional about this exemplar is the covered pouring spout with the original, factory-formed heart-shaped pouring opening (herzförmiger Ausguss). This typical 18th-century design—taken directly from contemporary goldsmithing—was intended to keep coffee grounds out and ensured a clean pouring jet. While this delicate bridge on almost all preserved pots is damaged, worn away, or restored, this pouring opening is still in its original, flawlessly glaze-survived state. The accompanying ribbed lid with an acorn knop and deep inner seat is also fully intact and fits perfectly with the cane-work pattern of the body.

Marked on the underside with the hand-painted crossed L mark in underglaze blue. This mark was in use only between 1772 and 1788, before Meissen objected to the resemblance to their crossed swords and Limbach switched to the cloverleaf mark.
