Carstens Tönnieshof West German pottery decorative ceramic jug-vase with a globular body, cylindrical neck and large lateral handle, orange/terracotta motifs on a dark brown glaze, dating to the 1960s–1970s and bearing the original Carstens Tönnieshof label, dimensions 23 cm wide, 25 cm high, 25 cm deep, diameter 13 cm, weight 1.4 g, in good condition with signs of age.
Description from the seller
Large decorative ceramic jug-vase by Carstens Tönnieshof, still bearing its original label “Tönnieshof Carstens W-Germany”.
This piece belongs to West German Pottery production, a movement particularly representative of postwar German ceramic design. The Carstens Tönnieshof manufactory settled in Fredelsloh, Lower Saxony, after World War II and became one of the major German manufacturers of decorative ceramics during the 1950s to 1970s.
This exemplar, likely produced in the 1960s–1970s, features a generously globular body extended by a cylindrical neck and a substantial lateral handle. The decoration is especially graphic: orange/terracotta motifs applied to a dark brown-black background, with alternating horizontal lines and large geometric compositions on the body.
The glaze work deliberately produces variations in substance, texture and color, characteristic of many West German ceramics from this period. The interior is coated with a light glaze contrasting with the much darker exterior decoration.
The base bears a molded form number accompanied by the designation “-25”, the latter corresponding to an approximate nominal height of about 25 cm. The first reference number remains difficult to decipher with certainty and is therefore intentionally not assigned in this description.
The original Carstens Tönnieshof label is still present, an interesting element for authentication and collection.
