A pair of Art Nouveau spelter vases dating to 1900–1910, mounted on square marble bases.
Description from the seller
An elegant antique French Art Nouveau spelter vases mounted on square marble bases. These decorative urns were produced in France during the late 19th or early 20th century (circa 1880–1910) to serve as mantelpiece clock garnitures.
Artwork Details
Style: Art Nouveau. The urns heavily feature the organic, fluid movement characteristic of the late 19th century French style. This is highly evident in the stylised, whipping curves of the handles and the asymmetrical, flame like leaf motifs molded onto the body.
Art Details & Subject: Botanical and Foliate Motifs. The design centers on natural flora, with sweeping acanthus leaves, stylized vines, and embossed floral buds wrapping around the central body. The twin handles dynamically branch outward from the neck like growing vines and reattach smoothly near the mid-section, emphasizing growth and movement.
Base: Square Marble Plinths. Each urn is securely mounted to a thick, rectangular block of polished marble. The stone features natural white, cream, and grey veining, which provides both a solid weight and a luxurious contrast to the dark metal.
Material: Patinated Spelter or bronze.
The metal has been finished with a rich, multi-toned finish, showing dark brown undertones accented by golden-green highlights to create an aged, antique patina.
Age: Late 19th to Early 20th Century (Circa 1890-1910).
Historical Context: These are French mantle ornaments, historically known as cassolettes. They originally served as side garnitures designed to flank a large matching mantle clock on a fireplace hearth.
Size: approximately 30 cm in height
Weight: over 1 kg each
Shipping Method: Securely packed and shipped worldwide via UPS tracked services to ensure safe delivery.
Markings: unmarked or unsigned, which was common for decorative commercial bronzes produced in Europe during the late 19th to early 20th century.
