Published in 1994, Yellows Privacy ’94 is one of the most distinctive works in Akira Gomi’s celebrated Yellows series.
Unlike the other books in the series, which primarily focus on the human body, this volume photographs 25 Japanese women within their own apartments and private spaces. Alongside nude portraits, Gomi meticulously records their rooms, clothing, personal belongings, refrigerators and bathroom cabinets, creating an unusually detailed portrait of private life in Japan in the early 1990s.
The book also has an interesting connection to Japanese cinema and animation. Director Satoshi Kon used Yellows Privacy ’94 as a visual reference when designing Mima Kirigoe’s apartment for his acclaimed animated film Perfect Blue. Kon specifically described the book as a useful reference for observing both the women and the details of their everyday surroundings.
