Afra and Tobia Scarpa are best known for their design work, producing innovative and refined everyday objects whose value has withstood the passage of time and changing fashions. In recent years, their buildings have also become familiar beyond the narrow circles of connoisseurs, but the success they enjoy as designers has in some way overshadowed this aspect of their work.
Roberto Masiero undertakes to correct this distorted perception and demonstrates in the lengthy introductory essay how it is not possible to isolate the individual experiences undertaken by Afra and Tobia Scarpa, and how what they realized at the small scale of everyday objects is the result of an 'architectural' approach to formal thinking.
The text traces their built works from the origins, showing how architectural experimentation represents the decisive side to understand the various steps their work has faced.
