Baroque-style cornucopia mirror carved in wood and gilded, from circa 1900, made in Spain, with an external height of 82 cm, external width 50 cm, internal height 50 cm and internal width 40 cm, in good used condition with small signs of age and imperfections.
Description from the seller
It is a 19th-century Baroque cornucopia mirror, carved in gilded wood, where nineteenth-century craftsmanship fully embraces the exuberant language of French Baroque. The piece adopts that cut, sinuous silhouette, almost shield-like, turning the frame into a sculptural presence rather than a simple contour. Every inch of the surface is animated with scrolls, leaves, volutes, and floral motifs, carved with depth and movement, as if the wood wished to imitate the dynamism of a stone relief.
The gilding, warm and slightly aged, accentuates the set’s theatricality: it rests on the high points of the carving, illuminating the volumes and creating that play of light and shadow so characteristic of the Baroque. At the top, a more generous terminal—an stylized shell or a spreading floral motif—acts as an ornamental crown, while the bottom balances the composition with another classical motif that visually anchors the piece.
Although it belongs to the 19th century, it remains faithful to the Baroque repertory: dynamic symmetry, abundant ornamentation, a taste for curves and for the sense of continuous movement. But it does so with the sensibility of its century, with a more pronounced, more expressive carving, closer to the historicist taste that sought to revive the great styles of the past with renewed intensity.
It is a mirror that not only decorates: it presides. A luminous, theatrical, and deeply classical piece, perfect for interiors that seek character, history, and that touch of golden fantasy that only nineteenth-century cornucopias know how to offer.
Tracked shipping and careful packaging.
