A large French silver drageoir or sugar vessel by Henri Clavel, dating to circa 1750–1800, weighing 618 g in .950 silver with a cobalt glass liner and gilded interior, 29 cm high and 19 cm wide, with a swan-topped lid, four globe feet, and intricate shell and dolphin motifs, bearing Paris assay marks from 1783–1789 (Fermier Général Henri Clavel) and 1756–1762 (Eloi Brichard) plus a Cahors/Toulouse mark and later Swedish Tre Kronor import marks.
Description from the seller
A large French silver drageoir or sugar bowl with a glass, cobalt insert and internal gilding. The lid is crowned with an intricately crafted finial in the shape of a swan, flanked by side handles. The body is richly decorated with three-dimensional motifs of shells and dolphins. The piece rests on four globular feet on a square base. On the base there are several assay marks: the Paris mark (1783–1789) with a double L, belonging to the Fermier général Henri Clavel; the Paris Charge mark (1756–1762) belonging to Eloi Brichard; and the Marque de Communauté mark with a seated hunting dog for the Cahors/Toulouse region (in use 1784–1789). Additionally, on the lid and the piece itself is the Swedish import mark “Tre Kronor” with the letter “S,” used since 1912, indicating later import into Sweden.
