A monumental sterling silver service by Spaulding & Co., weighing 1680 g and dating to around 1890, with a full round floral repoussé and chasing motif, numbered 72, including a 36x25 cm serving tray, a 30x23x7 cm coffee pot, a 12x13x7 cm sugar, and an 11x11x6 cm milk jug, all in excellent condition and hallmarked SPAULDING & CO., STERLING, and the serial model 72.
Description from the seller
Founded at the end of the 19th century in Chicago (with prestigious historic bases in Paris), Spaulding & Co. was one of America’s most luxurious jewelers and silversmiths, comparable in prestige and quality to historic names like Tiffany & Co. and Gorham. Pieces made by Spaulding & Co. are famous among international collectors for the purity of their lines, the weight of the silver, and the extraordinary technical skill of their master silversmiths.
As a testament to absolute authenticity and belonging to a coordinated series of the highest craftsmanship, weighing a monumental 1680 grams - each individual element of the service is clearly stamped on the bottom with:
- The mark SPAULDING & CO.
- The inscription STERLING (Sterling Silver 925/1000)
- The Serial/Model Number 72 which identifies one of the very early historical series of the manufacture (dated between 1888 and 1895), making it a piece of museum-worthy importance.
Finding a complete service preserved with all pieces coherent and bearing the same identifying number is a true rarity on the antique market! This service embodies the pinnacle of decorative silverware: the Full Round Floral Motif.
The entire surface of each piece is coated with a richly engraved texture depicting anemone/field poppy flowers in full bloom, intertwined stems and finely veined leaves.
The chasing work creates a spectacular play of light and shadow, where the petals rise from the polished surface, producing a visual effect of exceptional softness and tactile elegance. Each piece features a central medallion reserve adorned with an elegant monogram engraved in Liberty/Art Nouveau style (MLF / JMF).
The set elements are:
- Serving Tray: The centerpiece of the set, a fully chased silver stage where the central mirror reflects the upper elements. Size: 36x25 cm
- Coffee Pot/Tea Pot: Monumental and topped with a domed lid with a finely worked knop, equipped with a handle with elegant escutcheons typical of the era with black insulating rings (probably ebony or Bakelite) to prevent burns during solo service and a swan-neck spout of exquisite workmanship. The sleek line of the coffee pot/tea pot rests on a circular foot. Size: 30x23x7 cm
- Sugar Bowl: With wide opposite handles echoing the geometric and floral lines of the service. Size: 12x13x7 cm
- Creamer: With perfectly balanced proportions, symmetric in design and finished with the same masterful workmanship. Size: 11x11x6 cm
Condition: Excellent vintage condition. The silver retains a splendid, luminous patina that highlights the original chasing. Normal signs of age present; see photos in the gallery
Destination: Museum piece, perfect for collectors of antique silverware, to enrich historic homes or as a durable-value investment.
