This smooth sphere was carved from an authentic fragment of agatized fossil bone belonging to Atlasaurus Imelakei, a sauropod that lived in the Middle Jurassic, about 167 million years ago, in the lands that today correspond to the High Atlas of Morocco. The internal structure of the bone, beautifully preserved and enhanced by the agatization process, reveals an intricate network of fossilized bony channels, highlighted by white veins and branching textures that run across the surface. It is a phenomenon in which the original porosity of the bone was progressively replaced by microcrystals of silica, creating a striking visual effect: a kind of fossil geography evoking organic maps carved in stone. Atlasaurus, first discovered in the 1990s, stands out for its extraordinary proportions: an unusually long neck in relation to its body and limbs, which made it a majestic and peculiar herbivore on the African prehistoric landscape. This sphere was carved from well-mineralized bones, yet at the same time fractured by the long wait and geological processes. We took the liberty to carve it into a spherical shape because the bone was not whole, but a fragment.
