Candleholder (2) - Brass - brass candlesticks

A beautiful and characterful pair of English brass candlesticks from the 19th century, executed in the classic so-called “Beehive & Diamond” model. The warm gold tone of the old brass, the boldly profiled stems and the square feet with chamfered corners give this pair exactly that stately look that is so characteristic of English candlesticks from the early Victorian period.

The candlesticks are composed of several architecturally shaped sections. From the wide, square foot a stepped conical base rises to multiple baluster-shaped knobs. Notably, the large geometrically faceted knob in the upper section – the so-called diamond knob – is combined with the rounded, stepped Beehive forms underneath.

At the top there are long cylindrical candle sockets with a broad outward-flaring rim. This model closely corresponds to documented British candlesticks from circa 1840–1850, which are described with square feet with chamfered corners, stepped bases, inverted-beehive elements, geometric knobs and cylindrical sconces. Other antique dealers date similar English Beehive & Diamond candlesticks to around 1850–1860.

An interesting functional detail is the original push-up/ejector mechanism. With this type of candlestick a metal rod runs through the candle sockets, allowing a burned-off candle stub to be pushed up and removed more easily. Such ejector or push rods are specifically described for English brass candlesticks from this period.

For this pair, in one candlestick the long push/expulsion rod of this mechanism is no longer present. This is explicitly noted as part of the condition. The absence or jamming of these ejector components is not uncommon in historical candlesticks.

Condition
The candlesticks are in good used antique condition, with clear but appropriate signs of use and age.

The brass shows local patina, discoloration, light oxidation, scratches, polishing and usage traces, and minor surface irregularities. In the candle sockets there are residues and coloration from earlier use visible.

Important: one of the two candlesticks is missing the long metal push/ejector rod of the original ejector mechanism. The candlestick can of course still be used normally as a candle holder; only the historical ejector mechanism is not complete in this example.

A particularly decorative pair that is interesting both for the classic English form and for the original technical detail of the candle ejector system. The combination of the square foot, the profiled beehive elements and the striking geometric knob gives these candlesticks a strong 19th-century appearance.
