RARE UNIQUE HAND-PAINTED LARGE INTEC "APOTHEEK GAPER" FROM 1968
with "PAPAVERBLOEMEN"
A splendid specimen from the "Holland Museum Collection". A highly sought-after piece.
no. 18 from the series of 41
Weight 1.967 Kg.
Qualification: excellent
Gapers are genuine folk-art products and were only available in the Netherlands
These Gapers were made between 1960/1980.
Only drugstores and chemists with sufficient turnover received from the Intec company from Veenendaal/Holland this unique, hand-painted Gaper.
These have therefore never been sold/traded and were produced in a very small edition.
The molds were destroyed in 1981 in the presence of guests and have not been produced since.
Height; ca. 19 cm
Width; ca. 13 cm
Depth; ca. 11 cm
Weight; ca. 1.967 Kg
Material; natural stone
Despite its age the statue is still in a like-new condition.
A gaper served as the signboard of pharmacists, to attract customers, but also as a quality indicator for the shop.
Initially this sign was placed on the canopy, but from the 17th century increasingly attached to the facade, particularly common in Amsterdam.
The mouth of the gaper is not to gape, but to take a medicine.
The grimace of many gapers can be explained by the medicine tasting bad, at least that is the prevailing view.
Will be shipped by us with very good packaging but we cannot be held liable for damage during transport.
We wish you good luck with bidding on this very rare item
