Coupe céphalomorphe, a Kuba cultural piece from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, dated to the mid-20th century, provenance: private collection.
Description from the seller
This sale offers a group of works from the studio of a Belgian painter, gathered over time as a result of his discoveries, encounters, and affinities. The artists have often maintained a privileged relationship with tribal art: drawn to the strength of forms, the simplicity of volumes, and the expressiveness of materials, they were among the first to look at these objects differently than as mere curiosities. Their eye, naturally attentive to lines and balance, led them to collect these works and, at times, to draw inspiration from them. This ensemble thus bears witness to an intimate dialogue between artistic creation, the collector’s gaze, and a fascination with forms from elsewhere.
