Space Age freestanding magazine rack with an integrated ashtray in coloured Plexiglas and satin brass, Italian design from the 1980s, made in Milano; height 64 cm, base 30 x 35 cm, with red transparent base, cobalt blue transparent magazine holder and amber-yellow upper shelf, in good used condition with minor signs of age.
Description from the seller
Floor-standing Space Age magazine rack with colored acrylic and brass ashtray – Italy, 1970s
Rare and eccentric floor-standing magazine/newsstand with ashtray and accessory compartment, an authentic example of Italian design in the Space Age / Pop Art style dating to the 1980s.
The piece stands out for the extraordinary craftsmanship of the acrylic (Plexiglas/Perspex), skillfully molded into fluid, dynamic shapes. The high-thickness transparent Plexiglas self-supporting structure bears:
- A wave-shaped base in transparent red acrylic;
- A capacious magazine compartment with broad curves in transparent cobalt blue acrylic;
- An upper curved shelf in amber yellow acrylic, housing three fittings in dark-brass finish (ashtray and containers for odds and ends/matches).
The clever play of overlays and chromatic transparencies (red, blue, and yellow) combined with the brilliance of the translucent frame makes this decorative piece a scenographic object with great visual impact and unmistakably vintage charm.
