A genuine industrial object ready for a new life in a modern interior

Imagine this remarkable original GANZ instrument against the exposed brick wall of a loft apartment, displayed on a rustic wooden shelf, in a study surrounded by old books and technical objects, or in a contemporary interior where a single authentic industrial detail creates a striking contrast with clean modern surroundings.

It would look equally at home in an office, gentleman’s room, workshop, bar, restaurant or café, or as part of a collection of vintage and industrial objects.

Its black metal housing, light-coloured analogue dial, prominent “A”, pointer, exposed screws and naturally developed patina give it the unmistakable appearance we now associate with industrial and loft design.

But this object was not made to look industrial.

It really was an industrial instrument.

And that is where its story begins.

When machines still spoke through needles and dials

There was a time when machines were not monitored by digital displays, touchscreens and computers.

Switches, levers, indicator lights and analogue gauges surrounded the operator. For an experienced technician, a glance at the position of a needle was often enough to know whether a system was operating correctly.

This GANZ 80rDA ammeter is a surviving piece of that world.

Not a reproduction. Not a piece of retro-style decoration.

It is an original Hungarian industrial measuring instrument.

GANZ – a name from the history of Hungarian engineering

And behind this instrument stands no ordinary name.

The history of Ganz reaches back to the middle of the 19th century. The company's electrical engineering division was established in 1878 under the direction of András Mechwart, with Károly Zipernowsky appointed to lead it. In the decades that followed, the electrical workshops of Ganz became one of the important centres of Hungarian electrical engineering.

The history of Ganz is associated with engineering developments whose significance extended far beyond Hungary. Its work in the generation, distribution and measurement of electrical energy helped create an engineering culture in which precision, durability and functionality were fundamental requirements.

Electrical measurement itself became an important part of this tradition. A company publication devoted to the history of Ganz Műszer Művek dedicates an entire chapter to the role played by Ganz in the development of electrical energy measurement.

Following the industrial reorganisations after the Second World War, the independent Ganz Árammérőgyár – Ganz Electricity Meter Factory operated from 1949, and subsequent reorganisations eventually led to the establishment of Ganz Műszer Művek.

This instrument survives as a tangible reminder of this long Hungarian tradition of electrical engineering and precision instrument manufacturing.

An instrument designed to work

There is nothing unnecessary on the front of the 80rDA.

The large, light-coloured dial, high-contrast black markings and pointer were designed for one purpose: to provide a fast and unambiguous reading.

The prominent letter “A” indicates its original purpose: this is an instrument designed to measure electrical current.

The scale of this particular example ranges from 0 to 25 amperes.

A documented example from the GANZ 80rDA instrument family specifies a 150 mV full-scale value, an internal resistance of 2.5 Ω and a meter current of 60 mA. The dial of this particular instrument also retains its original technical marking associated with the millivolt measuring system.

Its design suggests that, when used as part of an appropriate measuring system – for example with an external shunt – the instrument could be used to monitor higher currents while allowing the operator to read the result directly in amperes.

Small scratches, areas of paint loss and signs of use on the black housing, together with the robust electrical connections still present at the rear, are all part of its authentic industrial past.

We have made no attempt to hide them.

Because on an object such as this, patina is not simply wear.

The patina is time itself, preserved on the instrument.

From measuring instrument to design object

Perhaps this is the most fascinating aspect of the piece.

When it was designed, nobody was trying to create “industrial design” in the modern decorative sense.

Form followed function.

The housing had to be strong.
The dial had to be easy to read.
The connections had to be durable.
And the measuring mechanism had to perform its task with precision.

Decades later, it is precisely this honest functionality that gives the object its remarkable character.

Today, the GANZ 80rDA can therefore be appreciated simultaneously as a collectible piece of technological history, a surviving object of Hungarian industrial heritage and a distinctive piece of authentic loft / industrial décor.

The instrument is offered for auction in its original, used vintage condition, with wear, scratches and other signs of use consistent with its age and former industrial purpose.

It has not been restored in a way that would remove or conceal its original character.

Its electrical operation has not been professionally tested, and therefore no guarantee can be given regarding its functionality. It is offered primarily as a collectible, industrial-historical and decorative object.
