France 19th century — Philatelic trio and postal history (maritime destination and undentelled Empire)
Set of 3 19th‑century period items in individual preservation pockets (2 complete letters with contemporaneous handwritten correspondence and 1 maritime destination military cover):
1 Envelope only / Maritime cover for the cruiser Châteaurenault at Piraeus (Greece) — 1874:
Envelope only (no interior text).
Franking composed in two colors: Ceres, Third Republic, perforated 60 centimes (steamer rate for Greece): pair of 25 c blue perforated (Y&T No. 60) + pair of 5 c green perforated (Y&T Nos. 54/55).
Addressed to “Monsieur Bailloud, Commanding Officer Second on Château-Renault, at Piraeus, Greece - via Marseille.”
Date stamp “Cherbourg - 28 Jan. 74”, diamond large-figure 924 postmark.
Red/brown square “PD” handstamp and handwritten transit mark “15”.
Reverse complete: railway transit message “Cherbourg to Paris - 28 Jan. 74”, sorting “Paris - 29 Jan. 74” and destination Marseille.
2 Complete letter with text — Imperforate Empire 80c carmine (shade 17A) — 1857:
Complete letter with contemporary handwritten text, inland postage at the 4th weight step (heavy letter rate) by 80 c carmine imperforate Napoleon III (Y&T No. 17A).
Imperforate stamp of first choice presenting 4 very fine, regular margins with intact frame.
Cancelled by small-figure diamond cancel 1818 from Lyon bureau.
Circular “Lyon (68) - 30 Sept. 57” and merchant handstamp oval “H. Féraud - Lyon”.
Reverse: octagonal railway transit “Marseille to Lyon - 30 Sept. 57”, transit through Nîmes and arrival “Ganges - 2 Oct. 57”.
3 Complete letter with text — Imperforate Empire 80c (shade 17B) on late large numerals — 1863:
Complete commercial letter with accounts and contemporary handwritten text, heavy postage by 80 c pink/red carmine imperforate (Y&T No. 17B) with all 4 margins.
Late cancellation: imperforate stamp cancelled by the Large-Number Diamond 3174 from La Rochelle (issue introduced late 1862).
Departure circular stamp “La Rochelle (16) - 28 Sept. 63” and blue merchant handstamp “J. Mègène & P. Laurent”.
Reverse: Niort arrival stamp and original seal in red wax with coat of arms.
Condition:
