Description from the seller

Piscitello – 4-tile panel in hand-painted Sicilian artistic ceramic, Santo Stefano di Camastra – 1960/1970

Important and rare decorative panel composed of 4 hand-painted glazed ceramic tiles, created by the historic Piscitello workshop of Santo Stefano di Camastra, a renowned center of Sicilian ceramic tradition.

The panel is sold in its complete design but without a metal frame.

Dating from the 1960–1970 period, the work features a refined and lively ornamental composition characterized by a rich interweaving of large vegetal volutes, stylized leaves, floral motifs, and arabesques, developed primarily in ochre, burgundy, white, and blue tones, with dark details and outlining that emphasize the drawing. The broad volutes extend freely across the entire surface, creating a continuous decorative motif with great dynamism.

At the center of the composition stand two winged putti figures, symmetrically arranged on either side of the central axis and harmoniously integrated among the ornamental volutes. The two figures, with outstretched wings and with a deliberately immediate and expressive painting style, constitute the main figurative element of the work and lend the whole a distinctive narrative and decorative character.

The composition is further enriched by large stylized floral elements and small circular motifs distributed along the margins and among the arabesques. The contrast between the light background and the warm tones of ochre and burgundy, enlivened by delicate blue inserts, gives the panel a strong graphic presence and immediate recognizability.

The overall design combines elements of Sicilian and Mediterranean ornamental tradition with a free, typically twentieth-century decorative interpretation, giving rise to a composition of strong presence and great visual impact.

The decoration testifies to the quality and originality of Santo Stefano di Camastra’s ceramic tradition, blending elements of Sicilian decorative culture with a formally modern twentieth-century research.

The panel consists of 4 tiles of about 20 × 20 cm each, arranged in a square 2 × 2 layout, for an overall size of about 40 × 40 cm (without frame).

The work is attributed to the historic Piscitello manufactory and is attributable, by stylistic and decorative characteristics, to Santo Stefano di Camastra production from the period 1960–1970.

The lot is also accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity issued by the Piscitello company, confirming the originality of the work and its dating to the 1960–1970 period.

Antonino Piscitello was a multi-award-winning artist, a leading figure at important fairs and exhibitions in Italy and abroad (London, Paris, Munich, New York, Chicago, Milan, and Florence). In 2006 he was officially recognized as a “Living Human Treasure” and was included in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list for Sicily.
