Description from the seller
Piscitello – 4-tile panel in hand-painted artistic Sicilian ceramic from Santo Stefano di Camastra – 1960/1970
Important and rare decorative panel composed of 4 hand-glazed and hand-painted artistic ceramic tiles, produced by the historic Piscitello manufactory of Santo Stefano di Camastra, a renowned center of Sicilian ceramic tradition.
The panel is sold with its complete design but without a metal frame.
The work, datable to the period 1960–1970, features a rich decorative composition depicting a large basket brimming with fruit, rendered with a lively, free and expressive brushwork. The scene is dominated by warm ochre and yellow tones, contrasted with the intense green of the foliage and the delicate pink, violet and blue shades of the clusters of grapes.
At the center of the composition develops a large basket with a distinctive flared, ribbed shape, painted in warm ochre, yellow and orange tones and outlined by energetic dark contours. From the top emerges a rich still life consisting of numerous clusters of grapes, leaves and Mediterranean fruits.
Among the fruits stand out, in particular, a large pineapple and a slice of watermelon, accompanied by other vegetal elements and vividly colored fruits. The grape clusters, distributed along the entire upper part and laterally to the basket, are rendered with soft brushstrokes in shades of pink, violet, green, yellow and blue, creating a pleasant chromatic contrast with the light background.
The large basket constitutes the visual focal point of the work: its vertical, slender forms give monumentality to the composition, while the abundance of fruits, grape clusters and leaves creates a particularly rich and scenographic image, traditionally associated with themes of abundance and prosperity.
The painting style, characterized by free brushwork, chromatic variations and a decisive graphic mark, gives the work immediacy and strong decorative personality. The ensemble combines elements of Sicilian and Mediterranean ornamental and figurative tradition with a free, typically twentieth-century interpretation.
The decoration, of great visual impact, testifies to the quality and originality of the Santo Stefano di Camastra ceramic tradition, combining elements of Sicilian decorative culture with a form-focused, typically twentieth-century research.
The panel is formed by 4 tiles of about 20 × 20 cm each, arranged in a square composition of 2 × 2 elements, for an overall size of about 40 × 40 cm (without a frame).
The work is attributed to the historic Piscitello manufactory and is linked, by stylistic and decorative characteristics, to the production of Santo Stefano di Camastra in the period 1960–1970.
The lot is also accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity issued by the Piscitello company, attesting to the originality of the work and its dating to the 1960–1970 period.
Antonino Piscitello was a multi-awarded artist, a protagonist of important fairs and exhibitions in Italy and abroad (London, Paris, Munich, New York, Chicago, Milan and Florence). In 2006 he was officially recognized as a “Living Human Treasure” and was included in UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list for Sicily.
