Antique French Empire Brass Sanctuary Lamp – Eternal Light / Ampel, 1800-1850
Description

A highly decorative antique ecclesiastical sanctuary lamp, also known as an eternal light or ampel, dating from approximately 1800–1850.
The lamp is executed in the Empire style, with a richly ornamented and highly sculptural design. The body features elaborate foliate and acanthus decoration, complemented by distinctive winged bird/swan-like figures and ornamental details. The strong symmetry and classical decorative vocabulary are characteristic of the refined Empire tradition.
The lamp has a beautiful aged brass surface with natural patina and oxidation, giving it an authentic historic appearance. Its impressive proportions and elaborate ornamentation make it a striking decorative object suitable for a historic interior, manor house, château, chapel or traditional European setting.
Construction
The lamp consists of three individually constructed sections, connected by an old threaded central rod running vertically through the entire piece. This construction allows the three sections to move slightly in relation to one another.
When the lamp is suspended, the individual sections therefore need to be manually positioned and aligned to achieve the correct overall appearance. This is part of the construction of the piece and should not be regarded as a defect.
Condition
The lamp is in fair antique condition, with visible signs of age, use and wear. It displays natural oxidation, an attractive aged patina, scratches and areas of surface wear consistent with its age.
Some decorative elements, including ornamental rosettes, are missing. These losses are visible in the photographs. The lamp has not been restored and is offered in its aged, original condition.
