Two hand-carved African wooden sculptures, a 55 cm elongated bird and a 19 cm portrait bust, dating from the mid-20th century in Africa; the portrait bust is probably West African while the bird’s exact origin is unknown.

AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Striking collection of two hand-carved African wooden sculptures, dating approximately from the second part of the 20th century.
The collection combines two completely different yet beautifully complementary forms: an extraordinary elongated bird sculpture measuring 55 cm and a smaller, expressive African portrait bust measuring 19 cm high.

The large sculpture is entirely carved by hand, it features an exceptionally elongated, gently curved body decorated with deeply cut geometric and leaf-like motifs. At one end stands a clearly recognisable stylised bird, connected to the central body by an openwork construction. A deep cylindrical opening forms part of the composition, although its original function remains unknown.
Its unusual proportions, extensive hand carving, dark aged surface and striking silhouette give the piece an almost architectural quality. The bird imagery and geometric decoration show a clear affinity with African carving traditions, although its precise geographical or cultural origin cannot be established and is therefore deliberately not attributed to a particular ethnic group.

The second sculpture is a charming hand-carved African portrait bust, probably of West African origin. The figure has strongly stylised facial features, a high decorated coiffure and a compact torso with folded arms. Numerous visible carving marks and irregularities reveal its entirely handmade character. The warm brown surface has developed an attractive patina, while traces of age and wear add considerable character.
Similar decorative portrait carvings were produced by African craftsmen for both local and international markets during the middle decades of the 20th century. Without documented provenance, a more specific cultural attribution would be speculative.
Together, the two sculptures form a highly decorative and intriguing collection: one monumental and mysterious in form, the other intimate and figurative. Particularly suitable for a Wunderkammer, eclectic interior or collection of ethnographic-inspired and folk art objects.

Dimensions
Large bird sculpture: approx. 55 cm long, weight approx. 380 g.
Portrait bust: approx. 19 × 8.5 × 7.5 cm.
Both objects show age-related wear, surface irregularities, small marks and a naturally developed patina consistent with their handmade and vintage character. Please examine the photographs carefully; they form an integral part of the description.
Origin: Africa; portrait bust probably West Africa. Exact geographical origin of the bird sculpture unknown.
