French commemorative medal in silvered bronze for Louis XIV and the Fortifications of Dunkerque, about 62 mm in diameter and weighing 110.04 g, a post‑restrike of the 1671 model with an aged patina and signs of wear.
Description from the seller
French commemorative medal dedicated to Louis XIV and the fortifications of Dunkirk, reproducing the historical model dated 1671.
The obverse features the portrait of Louis XIV facing to the right, surrounded by the legend « LVDOVICVS MAGNVS REX CHRISTIANISSIMVS ».
The reverse presents a particularly detailed composition dedicated to Dunkirk and its fortifications. There is a female allegorical figure accompanied by maritime attributes, notably an anchor and a rudder, as well as a depiction of the plan of the city’s fortifications.
The legend « FRETI GALLICI DECVS ET SECVRITAS » appears on the circumference. In the lower part is the inscription « DVNQVERCA MVN. ET AMPLIATA » accompanied by the Roman date « M.DC.LXXI », corresponding to 1671.
This is a later restrike reproducing this historic medal of Louis XIV. The date 1671 thus relates to the subject commemorated and the original model and should not be interpreted as the definite manufacture date of this piece.
The medal is made of bronze with a silvered appearance/plating.
Characteristics: diameter of about 62 mm; weight 110.4 g.
The piece shows a beautiful old patina as well as signs of wear and oxidation compatible with its age and preservation. The reliefs, the portrait, the inscriptions and the main details on the reverse remain clearly visible. The photographs are an integral part of the description and allow a precise assessment of its condition.
An interesting large-format medal dedicated to Louis XIV and the history of Dunkirk’s fortifications, offering historical, numismatic and collectible interest.
