The Marqués del Campo de Villar, Alonso Muñiz y Manjón, a noble and Madrid courtier, was a knight of the Order of Santiago and served as Mayordomo de Semana at the royal court (a palace position of close service to the monarchs Charles III and Charles IV). He belonged to an influential Madrid-based family with extensive properties and lordships in Castile and León (such as in the Bécares/Alija del Infantado area). He is known in art and architectural history because in 1773 he commissioned the renowned neoclassical architect Juan de Villanueva to build his house-palace in San Lorenzo de El Escorial (known as the Casa del Marqués de Campo Villar).
