Two 20th-century Dutch ceramic tiles in Carduus technique, designed by Jan Eisenloeffel and JAC van den Bosch.

In the first tile with the butterfly, Gouda, in addition to Distel, was added as part of a transition phase.
The second tile is somewhat earlier and bears only the Distel signature.

Offered is a rare and beautiful set of two original Carduus tiles with the iconic and highly sought butterfly motif and the Yinyang tile. This sleek, geometric insect design was created between 1909 and 1916 by the world-famous Dutch goldsmith and designer Jan Eisenloeffel for the Amsterdam porcelain manufacturer De Distel. The Yinyang tile is a design by JAC van Den Bosch.

Both tiles bear on the back the deeply stamped authentic factory mark with the Amsterdam coat of arms and the text "Distel Holland".

The tiles were made according to the famous and labor-intensive Carduus technique (related to the Moorish cuerda seca method). The design was pressed deep into the red clay with a lead mold, after which the areas were hand-painted with a thick, glossy layer of enamel glaze. The color combination of bright white, deep green, ochre yellow and warm brown is striking and characteristic of early Dutch modernism.

Condition: In nice, display-worthy condition. The glaze retains its original deep luster and the edges are particularly clean, except for a tiny hairline visible in the photo. On the back: free of heavy cement or mortar residues (see photos). The factory stamps are clear and sharply legible. Dimensions: approx. 7.5 x 7.5 cm each. A museum-worthy addition for the serious collector of Dutch silverware, Jugendstil and Art Nouveau.

These Carduus tiles are also on view in various museums including Museum Goedewaagen, Tegelmuseum, Mutek Museum and the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.
