Description from the seller
Small marble head, youthful and without a beard, with a cap-like hairstyle. Parallely carved, combed strands above the forehead, the calotte as a sculpted mass of curls. Eyes almond-shaped with heavy upper eyelid, smooth and without iris or pupil drilling. Small mouth with sharply incised corners, cheeks laid flat.
These features – combed forelock, flat face, and unpierced eyes – are stylistically comparable to Gallo-Roman heads of the 1st–2nd century AD.
Dimensions: head about 8 cm, total height with presentation base about 16 cm
Material: white marble
Condition: break at the neck, there a modern bore for the mounting peg. Back of the head and calotte clearly weathered, with sugary-grain texture and brownish discolorations; the face better preserved – a state of preservation typical for one-sided base support. Nose worn. No identifiable restorations or overpaintings.
Provenance: acquired from Auction House Artesia, 86100 Châtellerault; previously Auction House Mehlis, 08523 Plauen. Old collection number “8149 – 38”.
