Roman bronze folding key pendant dating to the 1st–3rd century AD, measuring 40 × 20 × 3 mm and weighing 8.99 g, with a nice patina, acquired in 2004 in Vienna from a private collection and in very good used condition.
Description from the seller
During the Early Roman Empire, a new type of key emerged, like this one—complex and intricate, often forming strange angles and zigzags, some with interwoven notches and peculiar shapes with holes. They were inserted horizontally into the lock with the tips upward, moving laterally to release the bolt.
Since Romans did not have pockets in their tunics, the keys were small enough to occasionally fit on a finger like a ring, with a dual purpose: not only decorative but also for practical use, especially if the bearer was in charge of a storehouse, a room with treasures, a coffer with valuable objects, or a safe.
