Textile (2) - 57 cm - 25 cm - Silk embroidery

A particularly decorative pair of two Chinese silk embroidery panels, executed with fine handwork and richly detailed brocade borders. The panels are of the same elongated size and clearly chosen as a matched set, yet differ sufficiently in color and portrayal to be strong individually.

The ivory/gold-toned panel features a graceful bird on a blooming branch, surrounded by flowers, leaves, and small insects. The red panel has a warmer, more powerful appearance, with blossoms, leaves, a butterfly motif, and dark blue rocky accents. Both pieces are framed with multilayer decorative borders and brocade, giving them a refined, almost architectural finish.

The quality of the embroidery is a key feature of this set. The stitches are fine and carefully executed, with different thread directions and textures that impart depth to the birds, flowers, branches, and leaves. The silk provides the characteristic soft sheen and vibrant colorwork typical of high-quality Chinese textile art.

Silk has long been a precious and prestigious material in China. Finely embroidered textiles were used for clothing, ceremonial objects, wall hangings, and the adornment of furniture and interiors. In the first half of the 20th century, luxury embroidered silk panels and table runners were also produced for wealthy households and for the international export market. These two elongated panels fit well within that tradition in terms of size, execution, and decorative function.

One of the textiles bears an old label on the back: “No. 016 – Textile China,” which supports Chinese origin. Based on style, material, and workmanship, a dating to circa 1940–1960 seems plausible. An exact production year is not documented.
