VT 10.5- Senator for the day; Komet for the night. At the beginning of the early 1950s, the Deutsche Bundesbahn developed two-immel trains for intercity traffic. The design involved Franz Kruckenberg, who had already made a name for himself in the 1930s with fast vehicles. In the development of the two trainsets, he could draw on valuable experiences from the Railzeppelin and the SVT 135 155: high speed through as far as possible pushed, uncompromising light construction from aluminum. For the first time, both articulated trains were presented at the Trafficking Exhibit (DVA) in Munich in 1953. The VT 10 501, built in 1954 by Linke-Hofmann-Busch as daytime train »Senator« for the Deutsche Bundesbahn and the already produced in 1953 by Wegman VT 10 551 as nighttime train »Komet« for the Deutsche Schlafwagen- und Speisewagengesellschaft. Apart from the deployment and color scheme, the two trains showed differences in type. While the passenger cars of the »Senators« were of a rigid-frame design, the »Komet« had Jacobs bogies between the units. In both trains the end cars showed two-axle powered frames. In the motor car, MAN diesel engines operated with originally 118 kW, later 154 kW. The maximum speed was 120 km/h: a planned increase to 160 km/h did not materialize. The power transmission was hydraulic via a four-speed transmission. The »Senator« offered its guests 135 seats in first class, of which 24 were sleeping places. With the start of the summer timetable of 1954, the trains began regular service. The daytime train VT 10 501 as Ft 41/42 »Senator« on the Frankfurt/Main–Hamburg route, the nighttime train as Ft 49/50 »Komet« between Hamburg and Zürich. The running characteristics of the nighttime train were judged positively, whereas in DB documents about the daytime train it is said: »All things considered, it seems that the goods wagon character is not completely gone from the vehicle.« The »Senator« remained in passenger service until June 1956, was subsequently rebuilt several times and tested during test runs. In 1959 it was decided to take it out of service and in 1962 to dismantle it. Except for the middle car VT 10 551i of the nighttime train which is used by Nürnberger railway enthusiasts as a clubhouse, all VT 10.5 vehicles were scrapped. The experiences with the two Kruckenberg constructions fed into the development of the later DB TEE Stars VT 11.5 within.
