Set of 2 Danish teak wall sculptures – herons/cranes – Mid-Century Modern – c. 1960

A special and elegant set of two vintage Danish wall sculptures, made of teak and dating from the 1960s.

The sculptures depict highly abstracted flying herons or cranes. The birds have been reduced to an ultra-sleek, almost graphic line, with a remarkably elongated silhouette and a subtly formed body. This minimalist vernacular is characteristic of Scandinavian Mid-Century Modern design from that period.

The warm reddish-brown color of the teak and the visible natural grain give both birds a lively character. Despite their similar design, small differences in the wood grain are visible, giving each piece its own look.

Of particular note is the proportion: with a length of no less than 48.5 cm and a height of only about 3 cm, the sculptures are extraordinarily slender. On the wall, they create a strong sense of movement, as if the two birds are flying in formation through the space.

Origin and comparison

The set originates from Denmark. Similar Danish teak wall sculptures are described in international design circles as stylized herons/cranes and are typically dated to the 1960s.

There are several related Danish teak bird objects known, but without an identifiable maker’s mark it is not appropriate to attribute this set definitively to a specific designer or manufacturer. The maker is therefore intentionally listed as unknown.
