Fossilised animal - 12.5 cm - 10.5 cm

Mortar with its pestle carved from fossiliferous limestone (usually black marble or Sahara sedimentary rock). The elongated and striped fossil visible on the side of the mortar is Orthoceras, an extinct genus of marine cephalopod mollusks that lived about 400 to 470 million years ago (primarily during the Ordovician). These artisanal pieces come almost entirely from the Erfoud region in Morocco.
