Pierre Monti Torino - Thermometer - Wood, Glass

Rare and interesting foldable travel thermometer with a hinged protective wooden case. Antique collectible from the mid-19th century, as suggested by the date “Paris 1850” inscribed on the scale. It is an interesting piece because it features two adjacent temperature scales: the Centigrade (or Celsius) scale on the left and the Réaumur scale on the right. The latter, developed by René Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur in the early 18th century, was once widespread in Europe before being replaced by the Celsius system. On the top part the maker’s signature is visible, “Pierre Monti a Torino” (maker of optical and precision instruments active in Turin in the 19th century). The tablet bears the classic thermometric annotations of the period. Ink handwriting / pyrographed inscription clearly legible. Original and functioning glass column (without bubbles or interruptions in the liquid) – The thin tube in the center with the lower bulb encloses the thermometric liquid (colored alcohol). Wood finish free of cracks.
