“Allure is something that exists. It captivates you. Whether it’s an intense or fleeting glance on the street or a face in the crowd—you’re captivated.” Diana Vreeland, fashion journalist Two vintage photographs by Richard Avedon from the 1950s provided the initial inspiration for the Susanne von Meiss collection. For over 25 years, the Swiss journalist, writer, and entrepreneur has been collecting photographs with a special focus on “allure.” The Susanne von Meiss Collection spans a representative range of all genres and styles in the history of photography—from the 1920s to the present—and currently comprises approximately 400 works from Japan to South America. The collection features works by internationally renowned photographers, though deliberately focusing mostly not on their iconic images but on lesser-known classics. The personal selection ranges from Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, René Burri, and Henri Cartier-Bresson to Horst P. Horst, Irving Penn, Paolo Roversi, and August Sander, and on to contemporary artists such as Tracey Emin, Nan Goldin, Daido Moriyama, Richard Prince, and Jürgen Teller. The collection was presented to the public for the first time at C/O Berlin (publisher text).
