Description from the seller
POLAND. Vilna. 1/2 Groat. 1546. Sigismund II Augustus (1548-1572)
- Denomination: 1/2 Groat.
- Reign: Sigismund II Augustus (1548-1572).
- Year: 1546.
- Inscriptions: Obverse: SIGIS AVG REX PO MAG DVX LI. Reverse: MONETA MAGNI DVCAT LITVA · 1546.
- Grade: MS63 (NGC).
Hammered silver/metallic 1/2 Groat coin of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, struck at the Vilna mint and corresponding to one of the early issues under Sigismund II Augustus; although his effective reign began in 1548, these pieces were minted from 1546 under his name and titulature. The obverse features the heraldic eagle with wings spread and head turned to the left, surrounded by the royal titulature, while the reverse shows the Lithuanian Pogonia, with a mounted knight facing left, weapon raised, shield and the date 1546 beneath the figure. The coin preserves a notably defined relief for this type of hammered 16th-century coinage, with good detail in the eagle’s plumage, the rider, the horse and the legends; the fields show the irregular appearance typical of the minting technique, with a natural gray-silver tone and slight surface variations. The MS63 grade certified by NGC is especially noteworthy for the preservation of detail and the overall freshness of an issue originally intended for circulation, belonging to the mid-16th-century Lithuanian monetary system.
