Description from the seller
POLONIA. Vilna. 1/2 Groat. 1556. Sigismund II Augustus (1548-1572)
- Value: 1/2 Groat.
- Reign: Sigismund II Augustus (1548-1572).
- Year: 1556.
- Inscriptions: Obverse: SIGIS AVG REX PO MAG DVX LI. Reverse: MONETA MAGNI DVCAT LITVA · 1556.
- Grading: MS62 (NGC).
Silver half-Groat coin minted in Vilnius during the reign of Sigismund II Augustus. The obverse features the Pogoń, heraldic emblem of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, with a knight on horseback, sword raised and shield, accompanied by the date 1556 beneath the motif; the reverse shows the heraldic eagle with wings spread, surrounded by the legend. Renaissance in style and a characteristic 16th-century hammer-struck execution, the specimen preserves particularly sharp reliefs, with excellent definition in the rider, the horse’s anatomy, the eagle’s plumage and much of the peripheral legends. The fields retain notable freshness and metallic luster, with a natural silvery tone and slight irregularities typical of the striking process. Its high conservation, certified MS62 by NGC, allows a clear appreciation of the heraldic elements of a representative issue of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania’s monetary system under the Jagiellon dynasty.
