Chinese Qing Dynasty Carved Ivory Figure of Shoulao – Late 19th Century AD
A finely carved Chinese ivory figure of Shoulao, the Daoist deity associated with longevity, dating to the final decades of the Qing Dynasty. The standing figure is represented with his characteristic enlarged forehead, long flowing beard and layered robes, holding a peach of immortality in one hand and a tall gnarled staff in the other. The upper section of the staff is elaborately carved in openwork with scrolling cloud forms and auspicious motifs, creating a tall and highly decorative composition.
